New Orleans — Community Record

Tell them about the dream.

Mahalia Jackson, born in New Orleans in 1911, sang "I've Been 'Buked and I've Been Scorned" from the podium at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. She's widely credited with calling out to the next speaker mid-address — "Tell them about the dream, Martin" — right before he set his prepared remarks aside for the passage that became the speech's most quoted lines. This shirt names the New Orleans voice behind that turn.
